Save your fridge from working overtime to stay cold with a deep cleaning of its condenser. Pull the appliance away from the wall and unplug it. Remove the panel along the bottom (in the front or the rear) that covers the condenser's coils and fins. With your vacuum's crevice tool or a special refrigerator coil brush, suck or swab out debris, taking care not to warp the long, narrow fins.

Silence a noisy faucet

Seasonal expansion and contraction can cause pipes to loosen and vibrate when you turn on the tap - a recipe for leaks. If exposed pipes cause the clamor, fit a wood shim or block between the wall and the pipe and pin the pipe to the wood with a U-clamp.

Smart Refrigerators

An article from K+BB magazine

"Energy-saving refrigerators, it's universally agreed, are a smart idea. But are "smart" refrigerators energy-saving? Finding an answer to that question is a convoluted process, and the result is to no small extent contingent on defining "smart."

As the most energy-hungry element of the kitchen (responsible for up to 20 percent of a typical household's electricity consumption) the refrigerator is the logical target for technological experiments and improvements. As well, its ample surface area - a kind of stainless-steel blank canvas, if you will - presents manufacturers with a highly visible location for the all-important user interface.

Many consumers equate smartness with such electronic entertainments as TVs, music players, digital picture displays and the like, which have been integrated into the fridge. While on track with our seemingly endless love affair with hi-tech gizmos, redundant technologies like these (that's assuming there's a TV, a computer or an iPod somewhere on the premises) can actually be wasteful from an energy-consumption point of view.

At the other end of the spectrum, some in the industry are taking a more pragmatic perspective on the concept by focusing strictly on the appliance's role in the still-evolving Smart Grid. GE's Brillion connected-home technology, in conjunction with its Nucleus controller, coordinates the refrigerator's energy needs with off-peak power rates and will be incorporated into some of its new French door models (shown). When linked up with a nationwide network of electricity providers, it has the potential to offer concrete payback for the consumer in the form of decreased utility costs.

Up to this point, product innovation that targets end-users has been mostly transparent in nature, focusing on processes such as optimizing energy consumption and monitoring the performance of the appliance. But looking ahead, some are aiming to transcend that realm and make the refrigerator itself an active, physical deisgn component. In collaboration with the British supermarket chain Ocado, researchers at the University of Central Lancashire are looking into "nano-articulated technology," where the fridge's shelves are made of millions of tiny individual tiles. These allow the appliance to move its contents around, ensuring that foods nearing their expiration dates are shifted to the front of the shelf.

So while at present the discussion of smart, energy-saving appliances is a bit murky, a direction is emerging."

Facts About Walk-In Bathtubs

I'm sure you've either seen the infomercials or heard people talking about those famous walk-in bathtubs. How could you not! They are all over our market, especially to announce to the country how important it is to think about safety in the bathroom. If you have ever been curious about how they work, you've come to the right place! At New Life Bath & Kitchen in Santa Maria, we specialize in kitchen and bathroom remodeling, but also advocate the importance of safe bathing. We sell lots of great safe bathing solutions for the home, like walk-in bathtubs, walk-in showers, seats, grab bars, support bars, etc.

The walk-in bathtub has always been an interest to many. It gives the consumer the luxury of bathing with the benefits of being safe. No one wants to have to step up and over the bathtub to get in and take the risk of falling and really hurting themselves. Walk-in tubs also have the option of water jets and air jets for a whirlpool feature, which is great for those who have arthritis or other aches and pains. These tubs are also very easy to install, as they are made to replace a standard 3-foot by 5-foot shower or tub unit.

However, walk-ins tubs aren't always the perfect fit for everyone. Some people don't like to take baths in general so this is an obvious mismatch and we would stear them in the direction of a walk-in shower instead. Some of the downfalls of walk-in bathtubs include, having to sit inside as the water fills up, and having to continue to stay inside as the water drains. It typically takes about 10-12 minutes to fill-up and a quick 3 minutes to drain. These tubs also come with a hefty price tag that some people can't afford. But it's very important to know that injuries and hospital bills are much more than the cost of safe bathing solutions.

Regardless of age, we try to inform our clients of the need of these safe bathing solutions in every bathroom. Grab bars especially. Anyone could use assistance to get in and out of a shower or bathtub, and we highly advocate walk-in showers in all bathroom remodels. They are safe, modern-looking and all-around universal. As we all get older, we need to consider these things in our home bathrooms. They are necessary whether you like it or not. Over the last several years, manufacturers have seen a large jump in the demand for air baths. There are several reasons for this, including what some say are incorrect perceptions of the differences between the two.

Air baths have grown in popularity above whirlpools over the last four to five years. Part of the reason is because it was a newer technology, and part of the reason was that whirlpools were starting to get a bad name. To the uninformed person, air baths are clean, whirlpools are dirty. The fact of the matter is, neither is the case. Either product can be clean or dirty depending on how it's engineered. Air baths and whirlpools are not interchangeable, since they have different purposes, and often customers will choose both to have each type of therapy available to them.

It seems that the air systems seem to be very popular right now vs. the whirlpool bathtub. This is due to the perception as well, both in the different type of massage offered, and the perception that water jets aren't as clean. Back in the day with the plumbing of whirlpools you wouldn't get all drainage out of the lines, so there's a perception that they are dirty. Some brands made sure the lines have the pitch in them that allows this drainage. Since that was done, now it's going to take educating the consumer about this so their perception isn't what it is right now.

Coordinating Paint and Furniture

In order to create a room that is balanced, stylish, and harmonious, consider a design that integrates all of the aspects of your space. Do you have a special item or piece of furniture that you want to highlight? A special couch, rug, vase or painting can be the beginning point for a wonderfully colorful room.

If you are working from a multicolored item, like a painting or a patterned carpet, it works very nicely to choose one of the less dominant colors and use it elsewhere in the room. You could choose curtains, trim, a door or even an accent wall in the matching color. This will bring harmony to the room and make your item stand out.

Another effective technique, best when you have a solid-color piece of furniture to match, is to make it stand out by contrast. If you have a boldly colored couch or vase, a complementary (opposite) colored wall will put it to best advantage. A neutral background, such as tan, gray, white or beige, will also have a similar effect. If your furniture is a neutral color, try bringing it out by painting the walls boldly behind it.

MSN Real Estate wrote an article on the 7 kitchen remodel must-haves for all homeowners. This is a great and important read for all. It informs everyone what's important to have for re-sale purposes and even for the homeowners to fully enjoy. These are the popular must-haves in today's market:

"Large Islands: Time was, men at parties would congregate in one room and women in another, says Bill Feinberg, owner of a kitchen and bath remodeling company in Florida. Now, "it's everyone congregating together," says Feinberg. "Kitchens to me are all about socializing." That's why Feinberg likes islands - with seating, importantly. "We're talking islands that are 10 feet long, six feet wide," he says, where people can sit, or a child can do homework, while a parent perhaps prepares a meal.

Give It Gas: "We put in gas whenever we can put it in 36-inch ranges and wider," say Sue Muenchow, a kitchen designer based in Ohio. Clients in all price ranges are interested in cooking and want high-quality stoves - and the natural-gas lines that serve them, Muenchow says. Such gas stoves can range from $2,000.00 to "the sky's the limit," compared with an average slide-in range that might cost $600 or $700, she says. There's also a trend toward both higher BTUs, so you can sear and stir-fry, and the ability to turn down the heat and cook quite delicately, says designer Barb Friedman: "They want to be able to cook hotter and cooler." Take the Wolf stove that has two rings on a burner and that can melt chocolate without using a double boiler, Friedman says.

Think Contemporary: "Thankfully we're seeing, finally, contemporary coming up," says Sandy Hayes, designer out of Oregen. What's that mean? "Cleaner lines, not so fussy," she explains. "Five or six or eight years ago, I would have found a French country kitchen would be filled with all kinds of moldings and appliques." Today, homeowners generally want kitchens with a sleeker look. What to do if you have an old-school kitchen that matches an old-school home? Even that can be cleaned up by removing some of the extra decoration and moldings, Hayes says.

Green Isn't Fading: "People are really looking for ways to incorporate 'going green' into their daily life - and believe it or not you can make that part of a kitchen remodel, even though remodeling is such a huge expense," says Natalie Howe, designer from Texas. There are lots of ways to roll green into your remodel: Cooking, using magnetic induction cooktops which is 90% efficient at turning energy into heat. Floors made from recyclable materials, like cork. Recycled glass used as a backsplash or in the countertop.

Open Wide: "We're still knocking down walls and opening things up," says designer Muenchow. "The kitchen is definitely the hub of the house," agrees Friedman, so people "want to open the kitchen to other parts of the house." Another reason: "We entertain more casually now. And there are more people more interested in cooking." Opening up the kitchen can be as simple - and as complicated - as removing walls to let the kitchen speak to the other areas of the house. But there are other strategies, too. "We bring the windows down to countertop level," says Muenchow, which brightens the room more. Placing a window and windowsill behind the sink also can open up more space as well as simply create the feeling of more room because the space flows into the glass. Good lighting can give a sense of openness and space, too. "Good lighting design is really, really key" as the room becomes crucial, says Friedman. "It's all about task lighting and ambience lighting."

Appliances: "Appliances are really kind of hot right now," says Howe. "Really consider personalized appliances that are based on your specific cooking needs." Stainless steel hasn't gone out of style, exactly, says designers. But increasingly, as people are interested in making the kitchen just another room in the house, "hiding" the appliances is popular - making the appliances look like cabinets, or tucking them away in drawers, or breaking up the traditional fridge/freezer.

Think 'Efficient": With all this talk about the kitchen becoming more things to everyone - whether social center or homework station - it's becoming more important than ever to make the space work as efficiently as possible, says designers. This will probably be your only kitchen remodel, says Howe, so she advises springing for the extras that will make your kitchen work better. "Cabinets account for half of the product cost of what you will spend in your kitchen," Howe says, so add space-savers such as a pull-out trash can, spice drawers, tray dividers and roll-out shelves. "Future home buyers are going to appreciate that you put that amount of detail into the cabinet design," she says.

How long can someone keep a can of paint before it goes bad? Is storing paint for 10 years too long?

Most paint manufacturers say that the shelf life of unopened paint is about three years, so ten years is quite a stretch. To find out for sure, it is highly recommended that you perform the stir-stick test. Mix the paint thoroughly for five minutes, then dip a paint stir stick into the can, lift it out, and watch how the paint flows off. If it flows evenly and looks clumpy or watery or smells bad, get rid of it. If it smells bad, the odor won't go away after you spread it on the walls. But even if the paint looks and smells alright, we suggest brushing it on the same material you plan to coat, to make sure it dries okay. The best way to keep paint fresh, is to minimize contact with air by sealing the can tightly after each use and transferring the paint to a smaller container when the can is half empty. And you'll thank yourself later if you label and date it.

But once you get past the key design questions - one bowl or two, undermount or overmount - you want to base your buying decision on other, less obvious factors that affect quality and value. Read on for five ways to see beyond a shiny surface.

1. Gauge its metal - You want the strong, silent type, which is characteristic - counterintuitively - of the lowest and thus best gauges. No need to lose sleep over 16- versus 18-gauge, but when you get up to 22-gauge the metal is more prone to denting and vibrating, and less able to handle a garbage disposal. High-gauge drop-ins can be especially thin around the edges, making them ill equipped to support the heavier weight of a quality faucet.

2. Get a back-friendly depth - Six-inch-deep basins are cheap to make, but they splash and can't hold much. A 9- or 10-inch sink, on the other hand, holds lots - a big plus when countertop space is limited. Keep in mind that an undermount ends up another inch or so lower, which could strain our back - at which point you might consider investing in a basin rack. Shape matters too. You get more volume with square corners, straight sides, and a flat bottom, but soft angles allow for easy cleaning and good drainage.

3. Give it the thumb test - Look for rubbery undercoatings and pads, which deaden the sound of running water and clattering silverware, and also reduce condensation in the base cabinet. If the sink sounds like a steel drum, it's either lightweight or naked - or both.

4. Study the ingredients - Stainless steel is ranked to reflect its contents. You want 300 series, or about 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel for optimal corrosion and stain resistance. The sink should also have a lustrous satin finish, which will develop a better patina over time than matte-finish stainless steel. Tip: If the sink holds a magnet, it is not 300 series.

5. Add points for a brainy drain - Some sinks come with drain assemblies and baskets, and some don't. There's location and design to consider too. Toward the back means more usable space in the base cabinet and better drainage when dishes are piled in the sink. A rear drain to the left or right is better yet. If side location isn't a priority, consider another innovation, the rimless drain, which doesn't trap debris and has a seamless look. Hopefully one day soon they will invent a rear side drain that's rimless, too!

Painting Horizontal Stripes on Interior Walls

Noah Winkles, our painting manager for our sister company New Life Painting, put together a great blog educating our readers on how to paint horizontal stripes on the walls of your home. New Life Painting just finished painting the interior of a beautiful home on the Central Coast that had vertical stripes on the entry way and hallway. The job turned out great! The following post will instruct you with step-by-step instructions if you want to try this at home. It’s time consuming but should be pretty easy to tackle.

New Life Painting was established on the Central Coast of California, with services from Santa Ynez to Morro Bay and the surrounding areas of the Central Coast. Call us at 805-NEW-LIFE (805-639-5433) if you would like our skilled painters to do this project for you. Or if you are interested in tackling the project yourself, follow these steps:

What you need:

- Paintbrush or a roller

- Large roll or rolls of the Green Frogger tape

- Tape measure

- Drop cloths and paper to cover your floors

- A pencil

- And a leveler to make sure your lines are straight

What to do:

1.) Before you start making your lines and painting, you will want to cover your floors with drop cloths and rosin paper.

2.) You will want to first paint the wall with a base coat. On the house New Life Painting recently did, the base coat color they used was a Kelley Moore color called "Crisp Linen".

3.) After the paint has dried, you need to figure out where you want to make your stripes and how wide you want to make them. Start from the floor, and with your measuring stick make all your marks with a pencil at the width you want your stripes to be.

4.) Then, when you’re done making the marks, start to go around with a leveler and make your straight lines with a pencil.

5.) With your Frogger Tape, go along those lines that are perfectly straight and horizontal. Make sure that you make the tape flat and that there is no air bubbles so the paint can't seep under.

6.) Once you’re done tapping the lines, you can start painting the stripes with your roller or paintbrush. The stripe color New Life Painting used at the home on the Central Coast was Kelley-Moore "Silver Queen".

This is what the customer had to say about the job: "Our house looks so amazing!!!! I love love love it!!!!
